Kestutis Jankauskas, the Lithuanian ambassador to NATO, has been appointed as the new chief of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia, reports LETA/ELTA.

"I am very happy that Federica Mogherini, the high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has chosen Jankauskas, the highly professional Lithuanian ambassador to NATO, as the head of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia. His appointment also indicates the good evaluation of the Lithuanian diplomatic service," said Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius.

On December 19, the EU Council said that the decision on the appointment was made at the Political and Security Committee of the EU. Jankauskas will replace the current head of the mission Toivo Klaar.

The EUMM in Georgia is an autonomous mission led by the EU under the EU Common security and defence policy (CSDP). Its objectives are to contribute to stability throughout Georgia and the surrounding region.
