Latvian and Moldovan officials confirm mutual interest to further develop bilateral cooperation

Latvian Ambassador Juris Poikans presented his credentials to the President of Moldova Nicolae Timofte earlier this week, and met with Deputy Foreign Minister of Moldova Valeriu Chiveri to discuss bilateral cooperation, relations between the European Union and Moldova, and the situation after the parliamentary elections in Moldova, reports LETA.

Poikans and Chiveri confirmed mutual interest to further develop existing bilateral cooperation, including through the exchange of high-level visits, cooperation in development cooperation policy, and provision of support for the reform process in Moldova.

 

They confirmed willingness to promote bilateral economic relations, and while discussing the EU and Moldova, Poikans expressed his support for Moldova's path toward integration with the EU and said that the Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga will also result in steps forward for Moldova in the context of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement.

 

Latvia and Moldova enjoy an active political dialog. Moldova is one of Latvia's main partners in development cooperation policy. The total trade turnover between Latvia and Moldova in the first nine months of 2014 was EUR 13.08 million, which is an increase of 10 percent over the same period last year. Latvian exports to Moldova reached EUR 8.5 million, and imports from Moldova reached EUR 4.5 million. Latvia has a positive trade balance with Moldova of EUR 4.02 million.
