The meeting dealt with the priorities for Latvia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the prospects for the renewal of the European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism for another term, some aspects of current relations between Liechtenstein and the EU, including the coordination of tax policy, and the reform of the UN Security Council.
Edgars Rinkevics highly appreciated support provided to Latvia within the framework of the EEA Financial Mechanism and expressed hope that negotiations on re-launching the instrument will be concluded in the near future. Latvia is ready to work on the issue during its Presidency of the Council of the EU. In a discussion on UN Security Council reform, Edgars Rinkevics emphasized: "Permanent members of the United Nations Security Council should abstain from exercising their veto powers in matters that concern crimes against humanity."
Edgars Rinkevics also informed Minister Aurelia Frick about Latvia's priorities for its Presidency of the Council of the EU, and Latvia's opinion on the EU-US Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.
Edgars Rinkevics voiced pleasure at the good and friendly relations established between Latvia and Liechtenstein, and the prospect of guest performances of the “Riga’s New Theatre” with a play entitled Garā dzīve (“The Long Life”), scheduled in Liechtenstein next year.
The opening of the Latvian Honorary Consulate in Liechtenstein in 2011 helped expand bilateral cooperation.
Minister Frick appreciated an opportunity for making a visit to Latvia, especially in advance of its EU Presidency.
Dr. Aurelia Frick has been the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Education and Culture of Liechtenstein since 27 March 2013.
