Mogherini in Riga: Eastern neighbors have to be respected

The question of Russia will have to be discussed in all seriousness in the future, but in the meantime, it needs to be remembered that Eastern neighbors have to be respected, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini said at a press conference in Riga yesterday, reports LETA.

The upcoming summit in Riga will be a good start, and Latvia will play an important role in it, Mogherini stressed.

 

She added that the European Union has access to a great number of foreign affairs tools which are currently not being used.

 

As reported, Mogherini arrived on a visit to Latvia yesterday.

 

Latvia is one of the first countries to be visited by Mogherini after officially taking office November 1.

 

LETA already reported that this past July, when Mogherini was put forward by Italy for the post of EU foreign affairs chief, many countries expressed objection that she is too favorable towards Russia, and too inexperienced in foreign affairs.

 

Her first foreign trip under the Italian EU presidency was to Moscow, where she met Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss the construction of "South Stream" – a pipeline, part of which is to be built by an Italian firm, that will pump gas from Russia to south-east Europe bypassing Ukraine.
