People should not judge Turkey based on critical information posted in social media, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said during a lecture for students at the University of Latvia on Thursday, reports LETA.

There may be much criticism of Turkey in the social media, but the people who only follow this kind of media fail to realize that Turkey supports peace and upholds the fundamental human rights, stressed Erdogan.

The president said in his lecture that the Internet was similar to a knife – if wielded by a murderer, it will kill, but if used by a surgeon, the knife will save someone's life. The social media are prone to manipulation, as can be seen in Turkey's case, therefore it is important for social media users to treat information posted there in a critical and analytical way.

In Erdogan's opinion, the social media are largely critical about Turkey. This means that those who only follow information posted in the social media do not know that Turkey supports peace and human rights, and invests greatly to help the less-developed countries, said Erdogan.

The Turkish president also talked about the Islamic State, saying that Turkey was following the developments in North Africa and Middle East. There is much suffering in Syria and Iraq, and the Islamic State had already occupied one-third of Iraq. There are very large numbers of refugees from both countries arriving in Turkey, said Erdogan.
