Erdogan pointed out that Turkey's EU membership talks have continued for almost 50 years, and added that ''more challenges remain''.

''Turkey's EU membership process has continued to be delayed for many years. I believe Turkey's EU membership would be a strategic decision,'' said Erdogan. ''Turkey wishes to join the EU not to improve its prosperity, but to join the global values which the EU represents.''

''Over the years, we have felt support for membership from many EU countries, including Latvia. However, the structure of the EU makes this process difficult, because if one member is against, discussions cannot begin. We are confident that progress on this matter will be made during Latvia's upcoming EU presidency,'' Erdogan said.
