"Let me express my greetings on the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU). We are living through turbulent times in our neighbourhood, and EU's unity is extremely important now," said the prime minister.

Among other issues discussed was security policy. "In the light of Ukraine's crisis collective security remains a top priority. NATO air policing mission in the Baltic states, which will be joined by Italy next January, is one of the most important guarantees of Alliance solidarity", said Algirdas Butkevicius.

On economic cooperation, the prime minister pointed out that Italy was one of the most important trade partners of Lithuania. "Bilateral trade relations are steadily growing, but there are still opportunities to make cooperation closer." said the Head of the Government of Lithuania, noting that Lithuania's accession to the euro area is also good news for foreign trading partners.
