State of emergency declared in all border areas with Russia and Estonia

Due to an outbreak of African swine fever, the Cabinet of Ministers today declared a state of emergency in all border areas with Russia and Estonia, informs NOZARE.LV/LETA.

The government supported the proposal from the Agriculture Ministry to declare a state of emergency in these areas.


A state of emergency has been declared in Rezekne, Ludza, Aloja, Mazsalaca, Rujiena, Naukseni, Valka, Burtnieki, Koceni, Beverina, Strenci, Priekuli, Rauna, Smiltene, Ape, Aluksne, Vilaka, Balvi, Rugaji, Baltinava, Preili and Riebini regions.


The Agriculture Ministry informed that the necessary funds to fight the spread of African swine fever will be found from the ministry's budget.


As reported, African swine fever was first discovered in Latvia on June 26 a few meters from the border with Belarus.


A week later, Saema declared the state of emergency from July 2 until October 1 in Ambeli County, Bikernieki County, Demene County, Dubna County, Laucesa County, Malinova County, Naujene County, Saliena County, Skrudaliena County, Tabore County, Vecsaliena County, Viski County of Daugavpils Region; Aglona Region, Kraslava Region, Dagda Region, Zilupe Region; Kaunata County, Makonkalns County, Pusa County of Rezekne Region; Brigi County, Isnauda County, Istra County, Nirza County, Nuksi County, Pilda County, Rundeni County of Ludza Region, and Cibla Region.
