The President underlined that Sweden was Lithuania's very close neighbor and ally.

"Sweden and other Nordic countries were and continue to be good partners of Lithuania. From the very beginning they extended strong support for Lithuanian independence and provided significant political and financial assistance. We are closely interconnected, both economically and financially. Together we work to achieve a balanced and sustainable development for our countries by the Baltic Sea and to make our people feel free and secure," the President said.

Dalia Grybauskaite pointed out that much has already been achieved through joint Nordic-Baltic efforts. Intensive cooperation between the Nordic and Baltic countries within NB6 and NB8 formats, good mutual understanding and coordination of common interests serve as a unique model in Europe for advancing regional development, overcoming financial difficulties and boosting economic growth.

The Nordic and Baltic countries have become a genuine example of responsible politics, and the region now records the fastest economic growth. The European Union's development strategies for the Danube and other regions are prepared in line with the Baltic Sea Strategy.

The meeting also focused on collaborative work with respect to the Baltic Sea environment as well as nuclear safety. Sweden supports Lithuania's demand that all nuclear power stations – built or planned for construction in the EU neighborhood – should correspond to the highest international standards.
