Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius hopes that lawmakers will manage to "find a dignified solution" to the issue of writing names and surnames in Latin characters, as well as those which are missing from the Lithuanian alphabet, informs LETA/ELTA.

Minister also notes that writing names and surnames in non-Latin characters has not even been discussed.

"This isn't Pandora's Box, it's a civilised attitude. We are talking about Latin characters not about Arabic, Georgian, Armenian or Cyrillic ones. No one is talking about this and isn't going to. Let's not open those boxes which are closed tightly and which will not be touched," Linkevicius told radio Ziniu Radijas.

A strive to establish an opportunity to write names or surnames using characters like "w" or "x" is not an attempt to demote the language, culture or history.

The minister of foreign affairs believes that lawmakers will find a way to resolve this issue with dignity.

"It will have to be done within the framework of the Constitution but in such way which would meet the international norms, and at last reduce tensions which are fuelled even artificially. Good relations between Lithuania and Poland are unfavourable to our geopolitical adversaries. Those who attempt to contribute maintaining tensions should think about which side they are benefiting, whether they are true patriots of our country or only say they are," stated Linkevicius.
