After the decision of Island's government to suspend temporarily the negotiations on accession to the European Union (EU) and to call a referendum, strong bilateral relations between Lithuania and Island will continue to be successfully developed, said Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius during the meeting with Island's Minister of Foreign Affairs Gunnar Brag Sveinsson in Brussels, reports Lithuania’s MFA.

"Whatever the decision of Island's people is, we will honour it. At the same time we believe that the huge Island's expertise developed preparing for the accession to the EU will be used in other areas of the EU-Island cooperation. Indeed, during negotiations we gained greater knowledge and understanding of each other", said the minister.

During the first meeting with the new minister of Island, Linkevicius welcomed great bilateral relations, effective cooperation in the United Nations, NATO and other international organizations, discussed the issues and perspectives of the cooperation between Nordic and Baltic countries and the issues of international policy.

Linkevicius also invited the Island's minister of foreign affairs to visit Lithuania.
