Lithuania's MFA presents presidency of EU in Israel

On 20 May, the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius, who is visiting Israel, delivered a lecture Lithuania's Incoming Presidency: for creating a credible, growing and open Europe at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya, reported BC the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"We should make Lithuania's incoming Presidency of the EU Council an opportunity, not only an obligation", the head of the Lithuanian diplomacy said.

 

The Foreign Minister acquainted the community of Israel's largest private institution for higher education with priorities of the Lithuanian EU Presidency: to strengthen the ground for financial stability of the EU, to further develop the single market, to expand the already existing partnerships, as well as to extend the zone of security and stability across the European neighborhood. Linkevicius also presented the Lithuanian Presidency's key event – the Eastern Partnership Summit to be held in Vilnius this November. In his speech, the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Lithuania's incoming Presidency of the EU Council would seek closer cooperation between the EU and the countries of the Southern neighborhood. For this purpose, a meeting of the senior officials of the Union for the Mediterranean will be held in Vilnius in October.

 

On the same day, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister met with the Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, the Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Avigdor Liberman and the Minister of Justice Tzipi Livni. The meetings discussed bilateral cooperation and Lithuania's incoming Presidency of the EU Council. The Foreign Minister invited the Knesset Speaker to take part in the Fourth World Litvak Congress, which will be held in Vilnius this September.
