The President underlined that Lithuania and Finland were close and important partners with strong bilateral cooperation ties and common goals in the Nordic and Baltic region as well as in the European Union.
Finland is a major investor in Lithuania, engaged in successful energy, wood processing, construction, commerce, and other projects.
Fortum Heat Lietuva – a subsidiary of the Finnish corporation Fortum, the fourth largest energy company in the world – is completing a combined heat and power plant in Klaipėda fuelled by biomass and household waste. The plant, which is expected to cover about 40 percent of Klaipėda's heating needs, is the first such project launched in Lithuania. It introduces a modern and ecologically friendly way of waste management to deal with environmental problems and also to reduce consumer heating bills.
Fortum Heat Lietuva has started working on plans to build a cogeneration power plant in Kaunas and has a construction project scheduled for Vilnius. Such waste-to-energy plants will generate reliable district heating for competitive prices.
During her meeting with the Finnish parliamentary speaker, the President emphasized the importance of active and effective regional cooperation. She pointed out that the eight Nordic and Baltic countries were a model example of strong regional cooperation.
