Hungary expresses support for Latvia's OECD membership

Yesterday, Latvian Ambassador to Hungary Imants Liegis met with Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi, who expressed support for Latvia's accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Liegis urged Hungary to support Latvia's candidacy during the organization's meeting in Paris on November 27-28, when the OECD will review potential candidates for expansion, LETA was informed by the Foreign Ministry's Press and Information Department.

 

Taking into account that the European Union's General Affairs Council will discuss the bloc's multi-annual budget next week, Martonyi and Liegis concluded that Hungary and Latvia have a joint stance regarding the Cohesion Policy. Liegis also emphasized that Latvia continues to insist on fair direct payments to its farmers.

 

Martonyi admitted that Hungary closely follows Latvia's success in overcoming the crisis and Liegis confirmed that Latvia plans to join the eurozone on January 1, 2014.

 

The Hungarian foreign minister also noted the sound relations between both countries and expressed hope that they will continue to develop in the same vein in the future.
