There is a significant unused potential for economic cooperation between Latvia and the United States, the new Latvian Ambassador to the United States Andris Razans said in an interview with the newspaper "Diena", resolving to dedicate much effort to fulfill it.

The ambassador explained that, in terms of politics, the U.S. is Latvia's main strategic partner, however, compared to Latvian-American cooperation in security, both countries' economic cooperation trails behind.

Razans pointed out there are several issues in Latvian-American economic, which must be solved in the nearest future, among the most important ones - the situation with Liepajas Metalurgs. "It is also necessary to achieve that our businessmen define their interests clearer and, if needed, turn to the embassy for support. Our politicians should also visit the U.S. more often, the places where business activities develop and meet with companies, just like the prime minister did last summer," said the ambassador.

Education-related issues are also important, since the embassies are capable of attracting new resources - economic, financial or knowledge, noted Razans. According to Razans,

for Latvia to attract U.S. investments, the country must have a corresponding business environment and tax policy. The state and local governments must be interested and capable of supporting incoming businesses. The country's economy must be clear, reported LETA.
