Latvia might reintroduce face masks if Covid-19 rate increased fourfold
BC, Riga, 08.09.2020.Print version
Wearing face masks might become mandatory again if the Covid-19 rate in Latvia increased fourfold, nearing 20 cases per 100,000 population, but for now the number remains below five, Health Minister Ilze Vinkele (Development/For) said today in an interview with TV3 channel, cites LETA.
The minister said that "in certain scenarios face masks are mandatory for curbing infections, but the current infection rate in Latvia, which yesterday was below five [cases per 100,000 population], does not require an extensive use of face masks".
However, if the Covid-19 rate in Latvia jumps, coming close to 20 cases per 100,000 population, wearing face masks in certain settings, first of all on public transport, might become mandatory again, the minister said.
She underlined that if the return to mandatory face masks becomes necessary, compliance with the requirement should be controlled much stricter than it was done in the spring.
