OSCE PA annual session begins in Vilnius

The annual session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) began in the Seimas building in Vilnius on Monday with the sitting of the Permanent Committee.

Several activists of the Lithuanian Movement met guests close to the Seimas building with placards. They demanded to stop military actions, withdraw the army from Ichkeria in Chechnya, compensate damages and restore the independence of this country. It is underlined in the address of Vilnius branch of the Lithuanian Movement to the leadership of OSCE PA, signed by board chairman Leonas Kerosierius, members of Vilnius branch of the Lithuanian Movement and supporters of Chechnya's independence will stay in front of the Seimas during the OSCE PA session and will explain the members of the assembly as well as guests "about the tragedy of the Chechen nation, Russia's despotism in this country and will help to rescue Chechnya."

 

A solemn opening of the plenary session is foreseen to be held in the afternoon. Welcoming speech will be delivered by OSCE PA President Joao Soares. Speeches of Lithuanian representatives are also foreseen on the agenda as well as those of the presidents of assemblies who have the status of observers. On Monday, the report of the OSCE PA special representative on gender matters is also foreseen. In the evening, the sitting of the committee on general democracy, human rights and humanitarian issues is to be held, reports ELTA/LETA.

 

In the evening, a concert will be held for guests in the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater and a reception hosted by Seimas Speaker Arunas Valinskas is foreseen afterwards.

 

The main topic of the OSCE session which is to last until July 3 is "OSCE: How to Overcome New Challenges to Security". The Lithuanian delegation will submit a drafted resolution on energy security during the session taking place in Vilnius.

 

500 representatives from 56 countries registered for attendance of this event, including 385 MPs and 51 accompanying person.

 

The opening of the session is to be broadcasted life by the first channel of the Lithuanian Radio and Television.

 

Moreover, Lithuanians will have a possibility to watch all debates over the internet and they will be translated into the Lithuanian language.

 

Lithuania has been an OSCE PA member since September 1991. Lithuania has 3 votes and 5 delegation members in this organization.
