UK has seen sharp drop in immigration from EU lately - Latvian ambassador

The UK has seen a sharp drop in immigration from the European Union’s (EU) member states lately, Latvian Ambassador to the UK Baiba Broze said in an interview with LNT commercial TV channel Monday, citing LETA.

The ambassador noted, however, that this was a “purely empirical” observation because the UK does not keep a register of residents containing data on people’s countries of origin.

In the ambassador’s words, the number of immigrants from Latvia and other EU member states that joined the bloc together with Latvia fell in the UK already last year. “The process has continued, so the number of Latvians coming [to the UK] definitely has not increased,” Broze said.

Asked about statistics on the Latvians leaving the UK, the ambassador did not give specific figures but said that the embassy had been getting very many questions from people considering remigration. Ambassador Broze praised the work of Latvia’s remigration coordinators and said that the embassy also organizes special meetings with expatriates’ organizations.

At present, there are over 100,000 citizens of Latvia residing in the UK, the ambassador said.

She also noted that the UK’s exit from the EU without a deal might cause a lot of complications both to the economy and the population and that she therefore hoped that the agreement would be reached.
