Heart surgeons of the North Estonia Medical Center (PERH) and the Helsinki University Central Hospital (HYKS), Gunter Taal and Karl Lemstrom, performed a heart transplant surgery on a 54-year-old Estonian man, informs LETA/BNS.

In the course of the eight-hour surgery the patient received a donor heart from Finland, spokespeople for PERH said on Friday.

"The period after the operation has gone as planned. The patient will return to Estonia on Friday," said Taal who has taken part in a heart transplant surgery before in cooperation with Finnish doctors, but it was the first time he performed the procedure on an Estonian patient.

More than 500 heart transplant surgeries have been carried out at HYKS in 30 years. According to Taal, Estonian doctors have also gained a lot of experience by operating in Finland.

Good cooperation with HYKS and funding by the Estonian Health Insurance Fund have made the procedure available also to Estonian patient. By today, four Estonian patients have received a new heart.
