During their meeting, the officials spoke appreciatively of the fact that Spain is one of the countries contributing troops to the multinational NATO battalion stationed at Camp Adazi. Spain has deployed 310 soldiers to Latvia, along with 15 Pizarro tanks and six Leopardo armored vehicles. From May to August 2017 Spain is taking part in the NATO-led airspace policing mission with 130 soldiers and four F-18 fighter jets.

Kucinskis briefed Rajoy on Latvia’s reform process, paying special attention to the tax reform which is currently passing through Saeima.

“Our goal is to achieve a 5% GDP growth. To ensure this, we need a tax policy that could compete with other EU member states and attract investment, including from Spain,” Kucinskis said.

Kucinskis and Rajoy also touched upon Rail Baltica railroad project in their conversation, underlining the project’s significance for Europe.

The conversation also dealt with issues concerning the development of the energy market. It was stressed that the Baltic states have done a lot to integrate with the EU’s energy infrastructure. At the same time, it will take the political will of all the parties concerned and the EU’s support, including financial assistance, to take the next step and decouple the Baltic power systems from Russia and develop a single Baltic gas market.

“We have been consistently supporting a further strengthening of the Single Market. We are worried about some legislative initiatives, including the Mobility Package and the Posted Workers Directive, which can considerably restrict the competitiveness of peripheral countries,” Kucinskis said.

Rajoy was also informed about the events Latvia is planning as part of its centenary celebrations program. King Felipe VI of Spain has also been invited to attend the festivities of Latvia’s Centenary.

The Spanish prime minister invited his Latvian counterpart to visit Spain at the beginning of next year.
