Swedish MFA assures Lithuania's Linkevicius on Belarus

BC, Vilnius, 07.07.2017.Print version
Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius says he was assured by his Swedish colleague that the Swedish MP's initiative to block criticism for Belarus at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) did not reflect the entire country's position, reports LETA/BNS.

Margot Wallstrom.

Linkevicius told 15min.lt news portal that Sweden's minister Margot Wallstrom explained to him via the telephone that "this was definitely the official position of Sweden."

During the Wednesday's assembly in Minks, Swedish Socialist MP Kent Harstedt initiated blocking of the Lithuanian-proposed resolution draft from the Permanent Committee that endorses the agenda.

Eight countries wanted the issue to stay on the agenda, while 20 countries wanted it excluded and 29 abstained.

Under the draft resolution, OSCE would have listed the Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) under construction in Belarus merely 20 km from the Lithuanian border as being built hastily and short of quality and security standards, dismissing its construction site as unsuitable.

The document would have also urged Belarus to rehabilitate political prisoners and ban death penalty.
