he first case of avian flu has been confirmed in Lithuania – the virus was discovered in six dead swans near the River Nemunas in Kaunas, the State Food and Veterinary Service said LETA/BNS.

"The highly pathogenic avian flu H5N8 is already in Lithuania, and it probably won't be the only case. Due to the high concentration of birds in the Nemunas near Kaunas, the virus can spread further. It is very important to protect poultry holdings, as entry of the virus to poultry rearing locations will result in huge economic losses," Marius Masiulis, head of the service's Emergency Operations Division, said.
