On Tuesday 21 February, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis held a meeting with David Davis, Minister for Exiting the European Union (EU) in Rīga.

Despite the upcoming withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU, Latvia hopes to further develop good relations between the countries, by strengthening bilateral cooperation, as well as continuing to cooperate in multilateral formats. Latvia is interested in close cooperation between the Baltic, Nordic countries and the United Kingdom, including within the framework of the Northern Future Forum.

During the meeting, Maris Kučinskis noted that Latvia certainly does not want to complicate the Brexit process, by stressing that the position of the State of Latvia in this area is pragmatic and rational.

M. Kučinskis reminded of the status and rights of Latvia's citizens in the United Kingdom, by pointing out that, in most cases, they have obtained education using the Latvian taxpayers' money, but now they are paying taxes and benefit the United Kingdom. The two parties agreed that interests of the people who have left to work in the United Kingdom cannot be affected.

Latvia is interested in as unimpeded trade with the United Kingdom (the seventh largest trading partner of our country) as possible. "We see that our companies and organizations are able to use Brexit to create new synergies - we offer Latvia as a profitable location for opening businesses, educational institutions, representations of financial services within the EU," said the Prime Minister.
