Estonian parlt panel head: Newsweek's claim seems to be disinformation

BC, Tallinn, 16.02.2017.Print version
ccording to chairman of the Estonian parliament's foreign affairs committee Marko Mihkelson, the claim made in the magazine Newsweek that a Baltic nation is gathering intelligence on officials in the President Donald Trump's White House and executives with the president's company seems to be intentional disinformation, reports LETA/BNS.

"To me it seems that the news in Newsweek is like disinformation that is being spreaded intentionally," Mihkselson wrote on social media on Thursday.

"The goal might be to spread mistrust between the intelligence units of the U.S. and Baltic countries, the long-term goal of which might be an attempt to damage a very important allied relationship," Mihkelson added.

"I assure you that whoever is planning it won't succeed. Estonia is not carrying out any intelligence operations against our allies," he stressed.

Newsweek reported on Wednesday that a Baltic nation is gathering intelligence on officials in the Trump White House and executives with the president's company, the Trump Organization, out of concern that an American policy shift toward Russia could endanger its sovereignty.

In the middle of January a rumour was spread in the U.S. media that Estonian foreign intelligence observed a meeting in Prague between a representative of the then future U.S. president and a Russian MP.
