BC, Riga, 09.02.2017.Print version
The government is due to decide next Tuesday, February 14, on a proposal to appoint Brigadier General Ivo Mogilnijs as the next Commander of the Joint Headquarters of the Latvian National Armed Forces, writes LETA.

The Defense Ministry’s Supreme Attestation Commission, which is led by Defense Minister Raimonds Bergmanis, endorsed Mogilnijs’ appointment to the second highest position in the Latvian military already on January 24, but the ministry kept the candidate’s name secret for three days after that.

The position of the Joint Headquarters’ commander became vacant after its previous holder Leonids Kalnins was chosen to take over from Raimonds Graube as Latvia’s Chief of Defense. Kalnins became Commander of the Joint Headquarters only on August 26, 2016.

Kalnins was sworn in as Latvia’s Chief of Defense on January 27 and Mogilnijs became acting Commander of the Joint Headquarters. In April 2016, he became Deputy Commander of the Joint Headquarters, but several years ago he already served in this position for a while.

Mogilnijs has been serving with the National Armed Forces since 1992. Before his appointment as Deputy Commander of the Joint Headquarters, he was Latvia’s defense attache to the United States and Canada and Capabilities branch director with the Combined Training and Advisory Group in Afghanistan.
