Lithuanian president to veto Civil Code amendments on insulting public figures
BC, Vilnius, 19.12.2016.Print version
Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite on Monday vetoed amendments to the Civil Code on insulting public figures, informes LETA/BNS.
The president proposes that the amendments should be deemed not to have been adopted, which means that the current provisions of the Civil Code would remain in force.
"The amendments facilitate persecution of not only journalists but also every person of Lithuania for a critical opinion about a public figure, the government and politicians," the president told journalists in Kaunas.
Grybauskaite consulted lawyers and representatives of the media before making the decision to veto the amendments.
