Nearly 200 patients in Latvia might have received donor blood infected with hepatitis C

It has turned out that outdated testing equipment at the State Blood Donor Center had failed to detect the presence of the infection in the blood. Over the past year, the State Blood Donor Center has sent out 195 letters to hospitals, warning that possibly hepatitis C infected blood might have been transfused to some of their patients.
After obtaining a new blood testing system last year, the State Blood Donor Center discovered that the old equipment had failed to detect positive hepatitis C results and that donor blood potentially carrying the infection had been forwarded to hospitals for transfusion to patients.
Suspicions that one of the blood donors might carry the infection arose after repeatedly testing the donor’s blood samples. All blood samples are stored at the State Blood Donor Center for three years so they can be tested repeatedly if necessary.
The State Blood Donor Center has rejected the possibility of patients still receiving potentially contaminated blood.
