The consular department of the Latvian Embassy in London has so far received more than 40 emails in which British citizens inquire about possibilities of receiving Latvian citizenship, informs LETA/BNS.

The embassy’s representatives said that the highest number of inquiries came in right after Britain’s referendum on membership in the European Union (EU).

Since then, the embassy has continued to receive one or two emails on this subject a week. The embassy notes, however, that the Latvian authority dealing with citizenship matters is the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

"The question about the exact number of citizenship applications from British citizens should therefore be asked to this authority," the embassy’s representatives said.

On the next day after the Brexit referendum, the Latvian Embassy in London received several applications from British citizens seeking Latvian citizenship, Andris Teikmanis, Latvia’s outgoing Ambassador to Great Britain, revealed earlier.

The diplomat said that amendments to Latvia’s Immigration Law had helped attract international attention to Latvia.

In the June 23 referendum, 52% of voters supported Britain’s exit from the EU.
