Latvian ambassador: role of French language might grow after Brexit

BC, Riga, 30.06.2016.Print version
The role of the French language might increase following the UK’s vote on leaving the EU, said Latvian Ambassador to France Imants Liegis on a Twitter port, cites LETA.

Liegis who is also Personal Representative of the President of Latvia to the International Organisation of La Francophonie (IOF), and recently presented his credentials to the IOF Secretary General, Michaelle Jean, today is participating in the meeting of the Permanent Council of La Francophonie in Paris.

"The role of the French language might grow due to Brexit," the ambassador concluded at the meeting.

Eurpean Commission President Jean Claude Juncker on June 28th addressed the European Parliament lawmakers in French and German even though earlier his speeches were delivered mostly in English. Such a step is explained with the outcome of the British referendum, supporting UK’s wish to leave the EU.

There are 24 official languages in the EU, and the three main working languages and English, French and German. The British referendum has stirred up discussions about the decreasing role of the English language in the EU, even though English is the official language also in Ireland and Malta.
