The upcoming referendum on Great Britain's further membership in the European Union (EU), the outcome of which is not known, is a cause for concern, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said during his visit to Riga yesterday, cites LETA.

The German minister said that Great Britain is an important European partner and its staying in the bloc is vital.

It is necessary to talk about the Brexit's negative aspects not only for Great Britain but also the EU. "The day after the referendum would not be 28 minus one, but something bigger. These challenges have to be addressed," the German minister said.

Steinmeier said that there are also other issues causing concerns about Europe, such as the difficult debates about migration, an issue to which Europe has to find a common solution.

"But a significant reduction of the migrant flow provides an opportunity to work without feeling the enormous pressure that was there last year. Latvia has not turned away from Europe, and we appreciate that," Steinmeier said.
