Ambassadors’ trip to Latvian regions: Daugavpils and border zones

On 24 and 25 September, resident and non-resident Heads of Mission accredited to Latvia went on the annual Ambassadorial trip to a particular region of the Latvian countryside. The trip was organised by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrejs Pildegovics, reported BC the Latvian MFA.

On the first day, the Ambassadors visited “The Garden of Destiny” (Likteņdārzs) and the city of Daugavpils. The tour of this uniquely landscaped park was headed by the Chairman of the Municipal Council of Koknese, Dainis Vingris, and the Administrative Director of Likteņdārzs, Benita Rugaine. State Secretary Pildegovics and the acting Dean of the diplomatic corps, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Lithuania to Latvia, Ricardas Degutis, took part in a symbolic oak tree planting ceremony. Several Ambassadors have made financial contributions to the continuing work on development of Likteņdārzs.

 

The Ambassadors then travelled to the University of Daugavpils, where they met with Prorector Inese Kokina, who made a presentation on the history and work of the university. The Ambassadors also had an opportunity to speak with students.

 

The heads of missions took a tour of Latvijas maiznieks bakery and Axon Cable, a French-owned manufacturing facility, whose senior administrative staff shared their experiences of foreign companies doing business in Daugavpils.

 

At the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, the Ambassadors were welcomed by the Chairman of the City Council, Janis Lacplesis, and the centre’s Director, Aleksejs Burunovs, who introduced the visitors to the permanent displays and current exhibitions.   

 

On 25 September, the following day, Ambassadors went to the Latvia-Belarus border crossing point of Silene and the town of Braslava in Belarus.

 

Colonel Olegs Jemasovs, Head of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard, and the Head of the Silene Border Crossing Point, Lieutenant Colonel Valdis Jukss, told the Ambassadors about the work of the border crossing point, cooperation with the State Border Committee of Belarus and facilitated border crossing procedures for local residents.

 

In the Belarusian town of Braslaw, the Ambassadors met with the Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Vitebsk Region, Oleg Mackevich, and the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Braslaw District, Vladimir Dranevski. The Ambassadors took part in the inauguration ceremony for a section of a historical road that has been restored at the Brukouka Recreation Centre, and visited businesses in the Vitebsk Region.

 

The development of EU-Belarus relations were discussed with Alena Kupchina, Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus.

 

During the course of the two day regional visit, State Secretary Andrejs Pildegovics had a bilateral meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Alena Kupchina. Their conversation addressed bilateral cooperation and the potential for expanding EU-Belarus relations, building on the work begun during the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
