Latvian FinMin: EU working so that Greece stays in the eurozone

BC, Riga, 24.04.2015.Print version
In an interview to Latvian Radio, Finance Minister Janis Reirs (Unity) said that none of the EU's economic or finance ministers are thinking about the worst-case scenario in regard to the Greek financial problem, and are working so that Greece remains in the Eurozone, reports LETA.

He said that the Eurogroup ministers are united in their stance that Greece must fulfill the conditions that have been set-out – achieving a balanced budget and carrying out structural reforms.

However, Reirs did admit that talks with Greece are not going smoothly. ''Whether an agreement will be reached is dependent on the Greek government,'' he said.

Reirs said that the Greek matter will not be delayed during today's ECOFIN meeting in Riga.

As reported, a Eurogroup meeting and informal meeting of EU ministers of economy and finance (ECOFIN) will take place in Riga today, the Finance Ministry informed LETA.

The Eurogroup meeting will focus on the European Banking Union, Greece's financial situation, EU economic growth, and other issues.

One of the most important events of the Latvian Presidency is the informal ECOFIN meeting, which will take place in Riga from April 24 to 25. The meeting will be headed by ECOFIN President, Finance Minister Reirs.

During the meeting, the participants will discuss the economic situation in the EU, its potential growth, as well as the necessary structural reforms to facilitate growth.
