On 12 March, the protocol was signed for the South African Republic by Dr Rob Davies, the Minister of Trade and Industry of South Africa.

With the signing of the Additional Protocol, Croatia, like other European Union Member States, can fully use the advantages offered by the agreement in developing trade contacts with South Africa. Latvia joined the agreement in 2005.

South Africa is the EU's largest trading partner in Africa. South Africa’s main exports to the EU are coal, diamonds, machinery and mechanical appliances. The EU exports machinery and mechanical appliances, cars and electronic products to South Africa.

The Trade, Development and Cooperation Agreement (TDCA) between the European Community and its Member States, of the one part, and the Republic of South Africa was signed in Pretoria on 11 October 1999. The aim of the agreement is to promote relations between the EU and South Africa in the trade sector. The implementation of the agreement is overseen by the EU-South Africa Joint Cooperation Council.
