Estonian PM: Greece must repay its loans

BC, Tallinn, 27.01.2015.Print version
Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas is of the opinion that the proposals of Greece to start negotiating its debt down are inappropriate and all that is borrowed must be paid back, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

"Any suggestions to begin negotiating its debt down are in my opinion, not appropriate. We have a clear wish that all that is borrowed is also paid back," said Rõivas.

Rõivas said that for Greece to get over its problems, it has to reduce spending and benefits it cannot afford. Otherwise, Greece will not be able to overcome its economic problems, he said.

The Prime Minister also noted that in his view, the European Union is not ready for a very big compromise. "The European Union has, after all, all the time been represented in the planning and implementation of Greek reforms, against which the Greek people voted now, choosing rather populist-minded forces to govern the state," he said.

"Of course, we respect the democratic right of the Greek people to make their own choices, but those choices should certainly not be accompanied by the hope that now, it would not have to fulfil its obligations," said Rõivas.
