On Saturday, 18 August, an exhibition titled Adamson-Eric and His Contemporaries. Reflections of the Self in Time opens at the Adamson-Eric Museum. The large exhibition, which is comprised of the self-portraits of recognised 20^th-century Estonian artists, will mark the 110^th anniversary of Adamson-Eric’s birth in Tartu on 18 August 1902, reported BC Evelina Vedom

“I thought it important to include, along with Adamson-Eric’s works, those of other people, since he had the opportunity to discuss the nature of art and its trends with many of them,” said Ülle Kruus, the exhibition curator and director of the Adamson-Eric Museum. “Eduard Wiiralt, Juhan Muks, Karin Luts and many others were his colleagues in Paris and fellow students in various free academies.” 

«Adamson-Eric and His Contemporaries. Reflections of the Self in Time» is an in-depth examination of the self-image of 20^th-century Estonian artists. More than 100 self-portraits by almost 50 artists who jointly shaped 20^th-century Modernism in Estonian art are exhibited on two floors. Jewels from the Art Museum of Estonia collection are supplemented by the works of Adamson-Eric’s friends, colleagues and students from individual private collections.

Alongside Adamson-Eric’s works, the exhibition includes large numbers of works by Eduard Wiiralt, Paul Burman, Henn Roode, Enn Põldroos, Jüri Kask and others. 

“The inclusion of works by other artists in the exhibition marking Adamson-Eric’s jubilee is very logical, because he was active in many artists’ associations, as well as in the organisation of art education. The retrospective is interesting and multifaceted, and highlights the timeless values of art.”

Erich Karl Hugo Adamson was an outstanding cultural figure and creative personality in Estonian art. He dealt primarily with painting, as well as with almost all branches of applied art. Adamson-Eric’s distinctive paintings and works of applied art are characterised by elegance, a refined sense of colour and wit. The development of Estonian fine and applied art over a period of more than 40 years is reflected in his work.

The curator of the exhibition is Ülle Kruus, the exhibition was designed by Mari Kurismaa, and Inga Heamägi is responsible for the graphic design.
