3% less babies born in Latvia in 2011

There was a 3% reduction in the number of babies born in Latvia in 2011 when compared to 2010, the newspaper "Diena" writes today.
In 2011, 18,620 children were born in Latvia, which was by 599 less than in 2010, according to information from the Central Statistical Bureau, writes LETA.
Commenting the situation Welfare Minister Ilze Vinkele (Unity) said: "Knowing the migration trends in Latvia, as well as the demographic situation, this is not surprising. At the same time, these figures are also very concerning. We must find some sort of solution this year"
Furthermore, when compared to 2008, when 23,948 children were born, there has been a 22 percent reduction in the number of births in Latvia in 2011.
