Government supported using Estonian soldiers at an anti-piracy mission
Print versionThe Government supported on Thursday the proposal to use the Estonian Defence Forces in the EU anti-piracy mission Atalanta and in the NATO-led naval operation Active Endeavour, writes LETA/Postimees Online.
According to the plans, up to 15 members of the Estonian Defence Forces will be used from November 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011 in the European Union Naval Force Somalia – Operation Atalanta and in the NATO’s naval operation Active Endeavour.
Estonia was among the first countries to raise the anti-piracy fight issue in the European Union. Participation in the operation would guarantee Estonia political and military visibility in currently the most important operation and also in the EU common security and defence policy at large.
Estonia would also get from participation in the operation an invaluable and adequate experience of anti-piracy fight in international co-operation.
