Sevastova advances at U.S. Open; Gulbis drops out
Print versionYesterday evening, Latvia's top ranked female tennis player Anastasija Sevastova advanced to the second-round of the U.S. Open ''Grand Slam'' tennis tournament after defeating Russia's Regina Kulikova 6-0, 2-0. Kulikova retired from the match in the second-set.
Latvia's top ranked tennis player Ernests Gulbis on the other hand dropped out of U.S. Open, after losing in the first-round to France's Jeremy Chardy 2-6, 6-7, 4-6.
At the moment, Sevastova is ranked 57th in the WTA tennis rankings, whilst Kulikova is ranked 75th. Both of these tennis players had played each twice previously, with Sevastova winning both matches.
In the tournament's second-round, Sevastova will play 11th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, who defeated Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm in the first-round.
Kuznetsova is currently ranked 6th in the WTA tennis rankings.
At last year's U.S. Open, Sevastova dropped out in the second-round after losing to Kuznetsova.
Gulbis, who was the 24th seed at the U.S. Open, is currently ranked 26th in the ATP rankings, whilst Chardy is ranked 64th. Both of these tennis players had played each twice previously, with Gulbis winning both matches.
In the tournament's second-round, Chardy will play Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Gulbis dropped out of the U.S. Open in the first-round last year as well.
