Estonian Culture Minister Laine Jänes declared on Thursday composer Erkki-Sven Tüür the Citizen of the Year the year 2009, Estonian press reports.

Minister Jänes said when handing over the title that this year’s citizens day motto “Creative people – successful state” is like a synonym to the hero of the day, writes LETA.

“He is a person among us, who every day lives his life in Estonia and is busy here, is bound by heart to his island, state and people and still creates big world music,” said Jänes.

Erkki-Sven Tüür received a glass sculpture, and an awards of 20,000 kroons.

Culture Ministry received 23 candidates for the title of Citizen of the Year.
