MPs attend Baltic Assembly meeting in Vilnius
Print versionRepresentatives of Latvia's delegation at the Baltic Assembly will attend the assembly's 28th session, taking place in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius from today, until November 28, as Saeima press service informed LETA.
Among the participants at the session, there will be the Saeima Speaker Gundars Daudze, the Chairwoman of Estonian Parliament Ene Ergma, the Lithuanian Parliament Speaker Irena Degutiene, the Vice-President of the Nordic Council Kent Olsson, Marcel Oberweis, representing the Benelux Parliament, and other officials.
At the meeting, the parliamentarians will discuss cooperation between the Baltic States in times of the crisis, and will jointly seek the best solutions for ensuring economic and social stability in the region in the long term. The parliamentarians representing the three Baltic countries will also discuss in Vilnius the work priorities and tasks for the Baltic States in the time period until 2020.
Within the framework of the assembly, a meeting of representatives of foreign affairs committees of the Baltic parliaments will take place; MPs will also each work in several work committees.
Another event to take place during the session, will be the annual Baltic Assembly awards ceremony, in which the Latvian poet and writer Inga Abele will receive the 2009 Baltic Assembly Prize for Literature for her her novel "High Tide" ("Paisums"). Estonian artist Marko Mäetamm will receive the Baltic Assembly Prize for Arts for his exhibitions and achievements of the recent years in the Baltic countries and internationally. The Baltic Assembly Prize for Science will go to Lithuania's Leonardas Sauka for his folklore heritage study "Egle, Queen of Grass Snakes".
At the conclusion of the session, a closing document of the 28th session of the Baltic Assembly will be passed; the assembly will elect a new president, vice-president and heads of committees for the year 2010.
The Baltic Assembly is a cooperation institution of the parliaments of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, founded in November 8, 1991. At the assembly each country is represented by 12 to 20 MPs.
