Print versionPresident of Lithuania to hold National Prayer Breakfast
This weekend, on June 20-21, President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus is holding the ninth National Prayer Breakfast entitled "Creation of the State in Times of Social Crisis", reports ELTA/LETA.
The participants of the Saturday event at the Presidential Office, which is scheduled to start at 15:00, will be welcomed by President Adamkus, Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius, Defence Minister Rasa Jukneviciene and Gitanas Nauseda, advisor to the president of SEB bank, will deliver speeches as well as state politicians, representatives of the public and youth will share their thoughts.
On Sunday, National Prayer Breakfast will begin at 10:00. The introductory word and the starting prayer will be said by priest Ricardas Doveika, President Adamkus will deliver a welcoming speech. MP Algirdas Butkevicius and MEP Leonidas Donskis will also deliver speaches.
The national prayer breakfast, which is held under the patronage of the president of Lithuania, offers an opportunity for politicians, business representatives, public figures and young people to meet and share their thoughts and insights.
The tradition of holding prayer breakfast events emerged in the mid-20th century in response to the new challenges of those days. Their roots go back to 1942 when several US senators met informally to pray together and talk about the teachings of Christ and spiritual support to one another. The first National Prayer Breakfast took place in 1953. It was attended by the President of the United States.
In Lithuania, the first National Prayer Breakfast was held in 2001. Since then, this event has been fostered by President Valdas Adamkus.
