Estonia: Armenian national team breaches UEFA isolation rules while staying in Tallinn

BC, Tallinn, 15.10.2020.Print version

The Armenian men's national football team, which is to face the Estonian team in a UEFA Nations League match on Wednesday, has during its stay in Tallinn directly violated the isolation and safety requirements established by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the English-language online news portal of public broadcaster ERR reports, cite LETA/BNS.

All matches played under the aegis of UEFA during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic are subject to the "UEFA Return to Play Protocol", according to the Soccernet.ee football news portal.

Section 13 of the protocol, published on Aug. 5, concerns delegations staying in hotels and directly forbids the activities the Armenian team has engaged in during its stay in Tallinn.

The team has posted pictures on both its website and Facebook page of its visit to the Armenian Apostolic Church in Tallinn and meeting with youth players and parents of local Armenian football club FC Ararat.

Among other things, section 13 of the "UEFA Return to Play Protocol" provides the following: "Team members (both players and technical staff) must not leave the hotel unless it is under previously agreed and organised conditions and does not involve coming into contact with anyone outside of their group."

According to the protocol, team excursions may be organised for longer stays; however, a two-day trip does not constitute a longer stay, according to Soccernet.ee.
