Lithuania records 115 new coronavirus cases, Estonia 57

One hundred and fifteen new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Lithuania over the past 24 hours, bringing the country's total count to 4,693, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday morning. The country currently has 2,217 active cases and 2,365 recoveries, informs LETA/BNS. A total of 774,987 tests for COVID-19 have been carried out in Lithuania so far, including 6,993 over the past 24 hours. Out of the 2,733 SARS-CoV-2 first time tests carried out in Estonia in the past day, 57 proved positive, the Health Board said on Wednesday.


Ninety-two people have died of COVID-19 so far, and another 19 coronavirus-infected patients have died of other causes in LIthuania.


A total of 23,981 people are currently in isolation.


The country has since June 1 registered 274 cases of coronavirus infection contracted abroad.


The infection rate in Estonia for the past 14 days now is 46.28 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.


According to population register data, 32 of the new SARS-CoV-2 cases were registered in Harju County, 11 in East-Viru County, three in Voru County, two in Jogeva County and one each in Laane, West-Viru, Saare, Valga and Tartu counties. Four of the people who tested positive for the virus have no registered place of residence in the Estonian population register. As a rule, such new SARS-CoV-2 positive patients are foreign nationals.  


Of the 32 new cases registered in Harju County, 28 were registered in Tallinn. Of the new cases in Harju County, three are linked to close contacts. In one case the infection was brought in from the United Kingdom while for the rest of the cases, the circumstances are being clarified.


A total of over 2,000 people, of whom 332 have fallen ill, are being actively monitored by the northern regional department of the Health Board. The northern regional department of the Health Board is monitoring seven active outbreaks, the biggest of which are the East Tallinn Central Hospital outbreak involving 38 cases -- 25 employees, 11 patients and two cafeteria employees -- and the Laanemere high school outbreak involving 34 people. The Rescue Board outbreak involves seven cases, an outbreak at a workplace seven cases, and an outbreak within a family six cases. The Haapsalu Nostalgia Days outbreak involves eight cases. A second workplace outbreak involves 14 cases.


Of the new cases registered in East-Viru County, in five cases the virus was contracted within the family and in two cases the virus was contracted at the workplace. The circumstances of the remaining cases are being clarified. The new case registered in West-Viru County was brought in from Russia.


There are eight active outbreaks in the eastern region. An outbreak at a workplace in Kohtla-Jarve involves seven people, the first of two outbreaks at a workplace in Sillamae involves 14 people and the second outbreak at Sillamae, nine people. An outbreak among a group of acquaintances entailed 30 people, the Tammiku basic school outbreak 11 people, and an outbreak originating at a birthday party in Kohtla-Jarve, five people. An outbreak within a second circle of family and friends currently involves seven people. An outbreak at the Kohtla-Jarve City Center Basic School involves six people.


The eastern regional department of the Health Board is monitoring over 917 people, of whom 183 have fallen ill.


When it comes to the new cases registered in Voru County, in two cases the infection occurred at the workplace and in one case through family contacts. The new case registered in Tartu County was brought in from Portugal. One Jogeva County case and one Valga County case were handed over to the northern regional department of the Health Board as the people live in Harju County. In one case of Jogeva County, the circumstances of the infection are still being specified. 


As of Wednesday morning, the southern regional department of the Health Board is monitoring one outbreak originating at a birthday party in Voru with 20 infections. A total of 423 people, of whom 51 are ill, are being actively monitored by the southern regional department of the Health Board.


The circumstances of the new case registered on the island of Saaremaa are still being clarified. The new case registered in Laane County was a close contact of already infected patients. The new case registered in Parnu County involves a student of the Police and Border Guard College, the source of the infection is unknown, but the student attended school during the infectious period. The western regional department is monitoring 22 COVID positive patients and 221 close contacts. 


As of Wednesday morning, 35 patients with coronavirus were undergoing treatment in hospital in Estonia. One of the patients was on mechanical ventilation. Seven COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospital during the past day, and six new cases were opened.


Altogether 465 cases of COVID-19 involving 452 patients have been closed in hospitals.


A total of 2,605 people have recovered from the virus. Of those, 2,000 cases have been closed, while for 605 people, more than 28 days have passed since a positive test result and they are not in hospital.


Altogether over 213,000 coronavirus first time tests have been taken in Estonia to date and 3,371 of them, or 1.58 percent, have returned a positive result.
