Organizers of public events are doing everything they can to ensure as safe environment as possible for participants of the forthcoming Riga Festival and other events, Jurijs Perevoscikovs, Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Prevention at the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), said in an interview to Latvian Television.

The epidemiologist said that Latvia should not allow the situation, which is already seen in other countries, where Covid-19 restrictions are being toughened again to curb fresh outbreaks. We should be able to enjoy the rest of this summer instead of getting sick, Perevoscikovs said. 

People therefore should respect the organizers' instructions, and most importantly - observe physical distancing, which is the best way to protect oneself from getting the virus from an unknown spreader, Perevoscikovs said.

He also called on people to avoid visiting crowded places and to think about the kids who have to return to school in two weeks' time. 

"It is better to refrain [from going there], because the risks at such mass events might be high enough at the moment," the epidemiologist warned, stressing that the organizers will be following the instructions.
