Sailboat captain lost at sea near Vormsi island in Estonia

The captain of a sailing boat fell overboard near the Estonian island of Vormsi on Thursday and is yet to be found, Postimees reports, cites LETA/BNS.


The accident occurred at 12:50 p.m. northeast of Vormsi island. The captain fell overboard without a safety jacket and was not seen again by the person who contacted the Alarm Center. The name of the captain is not yet known.


The sailboat was on its way from the Port of Dirhami in Laane County to the town of Haapsalu and had been sailing for approximately two hours before the accident.


A helicopter and a vessel of the Police and Border Guard Board, General Kurvits, were included in the rescue effort. 


At 4:45 p.m., the police announced that the helicopter had also examined the shoreline in the area; however, the captain remained missing. His sailing boat had been towed to the border guard base by that time.
