Former basketball player Mihkel Tiks planning hunger strike

BC, Tallinn, 09.07.2020.Print version

Former top basketball player and later journalist and writer Mihkel Tiks is planning to start a hunger strike in front of the Estonian Ministry of the Interior on Monday in order to speed up the settlement of his family life issue, informs LETA/BNS.

Tiks told BNS that at 9 a.m. on July 13, he would start a hunger strike next to the front door of the Ministry of the Interior at 61 Pikk Street in Tallinn.

According to him, the purpose of the strike is to protest against the government's refusal to allow his domestic partner Marina Ponomarenko into Estonia.

Tiks' partner Ponomarenko is a Ukrainian citizen with whom they lived in cohabitation before the declaration of the emergency situation, staying alternately in Estonia and Ukraine.

"Reuniting has become impossible after the closure of the borders, because only a spouse officially registered as married to an Estonian citizen is allowed to cross the Estonian state border," Tiks said.

According to Tiks, they have taken all the necessary steps to be together in Estonia, but the Estonian state has not yet allowed them to do so.
