Latvian academician Janis Stradins passes away

Latvian academician of the Latvian Academy of Science (LZA), professor Janis Stradins has passed away at the age of 85, the academy informed LETA. 


According to LETA archives, Stradins was born on December 10, 1933, in the family of surgeon Pauls Stradins.


Stradins in 1961 established the Laboratory of Physical Organic Chemistry and chaired it until 2006. 


He was one of the members of the Awakening Movement in Latvia in 1998.


Since 1990 he was a researcher at the Institute of History of Latvia, and since 1992 also a researcher at the Institute of History of Medicine.


In 1996-1998 Stradins was the vice president of LZA, and in 1994-2004 - LZA president. 


Stradins is the author or co-author of seven book and more than 330 scientific publications in chemistry, as well as 20 books and more than 270 scientific publications in history.


He has received many awards, including Latvian top-state decoration - the Order of Three Stars, the highest French order The Legion of Honor, and Estonian Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana.
