On Friday, November 21, Riga Mayor Janis Birks (For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK) together with the Rigan of the Year – conductor Maris Sirmais, and his choir "Kamer", will visit Olaine Forest to choose Riga's main Christmas tree.

As Birks' press secretary Kristine Liepa informed LETA that it is planned to set up the Christmas tree at the Dome Square on the day of the First Advent, November 30.

Also last year Riga's central Christmas tree was set up at the Dome Square on the First Advent. Last year the central Christmas tree was 50 years old and 17 meters high, it was chosen by Riga Mayor Birks, jointly with the former mayors of Riga Andrejs Inkulis, Andris Teikmanis, Maris Purgailis, Andris Berzins (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way), Andris Argalis (People's Party), Gundars Bojars (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way) and Aivars Aksenoks.
