Simonas Alperavicius, chairman of the Lithuanian Jewish Community, has been awarded with one of the highest German awards – Cross of Merit – First class of the Order of Merits for long-term work for the benefit of the relations between Lithuania and Germany and for the sake of the reconciliation between the German and the Lithuanian Jews communities and their members, informs ELTA.

On Wednesday German Ambassador to Lithuania Hans Peter Annen commissioned by German Federal President Horst Kohler presented the award to Alperavicius.

According to the German Embassy, Alperavicius gave important and long-term impulses to the finally flourishing life of Jews in Lithuania and Germany due to his constant support, primarily that in youth exchange and education areas. "By awarding this order, the federal president shows that Alperavicius has merited to Germany by his deeds," the embassy claims.
