US strategic bombers B-52 flew over Latvia during a scheduled training exercise on Monday, LETA was told at the Latvian Defense Ministry.

The ministry’s spokesman Kaspars Galkins said that the warplanes flew over Latvian territory as part of a scheduled training exercise.

The ministry’s representative would not reveal the number of B-52 bombers that flew over Latvia but indicated that aircraft of this type have been involved in exercises in the Baltics, including Latvia, already before.

Speaking though Galkins, Defense Minister Artis Pabriks (For Development/For) underlined that the movement of allied aircraft is taking place in line with the training schedule in order to bolster the Baltic region’s security. The minister also noted that Russia has been holding drills with various military aircraft in the Baltic Sea region on a regular basis and that the allied forces’ exercise reminds that they too are testing their response and operational capabilities.
